The UK government has joined France in calling for an end to sales of cars and vans fueled by gasoline or diesel by 2040.

The UK government has joined France in calling for an end to sales of cars and vans fueled by gasoline or diesel by 2040.

The UK Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs said the measure is part of a broader program to trim roadside emissions of nitrogen dioxide and other air pollutants.

Although UK emissions of NO2 have fallen by half in the last 15 years, the department said, the country remains one of 17 European Union countries exceeding targeted ceilings.

The French government announced plans to end sales of gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040 early this month.

It linked the proposal to plans for meeting targets for emissions of greenhouse gases under the Paris agreement of 2015.

In June, the government disclosed plans to halt the licensing of oil and gas exploration (OGJ Online, June 26, 2017).
