Qatar Petroleum (QP) has let a contract to Chiyoda Corp. to conduct a detailed study to expand the operator’s natural gas processing capacity in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Doha, Qatar.
The study will identify modifications required to debottleneck capacity of QP’s existing LNG trains in Ras Laffan Industrial City in order to process additional gas production from the planned development in the southern sector of North field, the companies said in separate releases.
Scheduled to be completed before yearend, the study will allow QP to kick off front-end engineering and design work in early 2018.
A value of the contract was not disclosed.
New project
This latest contract follows Qatar’s April announcement that it has ended a self-imposed moratorium on exploration and development of North field (OGJ Online, Apr. 4, 2017).
Qatar declared the moratorium on North field in 2005, saying it needed time to study the reservoir, from which nearly all of Qatar’s existing gas production comes.
The new gas project in North field’s southern sector, which will produce 2 bcfd of gas for export, will increase overall field output by 10% and add about 400,000 b/d of oil equivalent to Qatar’s overall production, QP said in an Apr. 3 release.
The announcement was made by QP’s Pres. and Chief Executive Officer Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, who said, “The newly proposed project follows work QP began in 2005 to conduct extensive technical studies and assessment of North field, including drilling a number of appraisal wells to better estimate the field’s production potential.”
