Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi has deployed military troops to protect his country’s oil and gas fields from protests thought to be aimed at disrupting production.

Protestors in Tataouine and Kebili provinces, in the southern part of the country, demand jobs and shares of revenue from natural resources. They’re also targeting phosphate production.

Tunisian production recently averaged 47,000 b/d of oil and 242 MMcfd of natural gas.

The country produced as much as 120,000 b/d in the 1980s.
