Joe Wright has announced his intention to retire as executive vice-president and chief operating officer of Concho Resources Inc., Midland, Tex., in January 2019. He’ll be succeeded by Will Giraud.
Giraud has been executive vice-president, chief commercial officer, and corporate secretary since 2013, leading Concho’s business development function and responsible for legal and government affairs, as well as human resources, security, and facilities.
Giraud joined Concho as vice-president, general counsel, and corporate secretary in 2009, and was later named senior vice-president, general counsel, and corporate secretary in 2010. Will began his career practicing corporate and securities law at Vinson & Elkins LLP.
Wright, who’s been appointed to the company’s board, has been with Concho since its formation in 2004. Since joining Concho, he has held a variety of leadership positions, including senior vice-president and chief operating officer and vice-president of engineering and operations. As executive vice-president and chief operating officer, he oversees exploration and production operations, corporate engineering, and land management.
Prior to Concho, Wright was vice-president of operations and engineering of Concho Oil & Gas Corp. from its formation in 2001 until its sale in 2004. From 1997 to 2001, he was vice-president of operations of Concho Resources Inc., a predecessor company to Concho. He has also worked in several operations, engineering, and capital markets positions at Mewbourne Oil Co.
Additionally, Jack Harper, currently executive vice-president and chief financial officer, has been named president and chief financial officer. Concho also announced the promotions of Gayle Burleson, Travis Counts, Price Moncrief, Erick Nelson, and Brenda Schroer. As a result of these promotions, the executive management team now consists of:

• Joe Wright, executive vice-president and chief operating officer

• Gayle Burleson, senior vice-president of business development

• Price Moncrief, senior vice-president of finance and strategy
• Erick Nelson, senior vice-president of operations and production
• Brenda Schroer, senior vice-president, chief accounting officer, and treasurer
Other leadership changes include the promotion of James Caputo, presently director of business development, to vice-president of business development; and the promotion of Chris Spies, presently chief geoscientist, to vice-president of geoscience and technology.
