The second jacket for the Shah Deniz Stage 2 platforms departed the Heydar Aliyev Baku Deepwater Jackets Factory (BDJF) in Azerbaijan on Mar. 15 and is on its way to the Shah Deniz contract area in the Caspian Sea.

BP PLC, member of the Shah Deniz 2 consortium, says the transportation, launch, positioning, pile installation, and final completion activities of the quarters and utilities (QU) platform jacket structure are expected to take about 75 days, depending on the prevailing weather conditions.

The QU platform jacket weighs 12,084 tonnes and stands 105 m high. It contains 31 J-tubes, 7 utility caissons, and 3 J-tube caissons. The jacket will be installed in 95 m of water.

The jacket, completed on Feb. 20, was built by a consortium of BOS Shelf LLC, Saipem Contracting Netherlands BV, and Star Gulf FZCO. It was then loaded onto transportation barge STB-1 at the quayside of BDJF.

“The second jacket sail-away is the first major milestone planned for this year and we are pleased to have achieved it ahead of schedule,” commented Ewan Drummond, BP vice-president, Shah Deniz 2 projects. He said the project is around 90% complete.
