The US count of active drilling rigs jumped 15 units to 824 during the week ended Mar. 31, according to data from Baker Hughes Inc. This count is up 374 units from a year ago.
Rigs drilling onshore jumped 11 units to reach 798 while those in inland waters remained unchanged at 4 units. Rigs drilling offshore gained 4 units to 22 working.
Rigs targeting oil jumped 10 units to reach 662 while those targeting gas hit 160, up 5 units.
Directional and horizontal wells increased 12 units each this week, reaching 70 and 685, respectively.
Among the major producing states, Texas reached 411, up 7 units this week. Louisiana was up 6 units to 59. Alaska climbed 3 to reach 8 units. New Mexico was up 2 units to 50.
Eight states were unchanged this week. These were Oklahoma, 118; Pennsylvania, 33; Ohio, 21; Wyoming, 16; West Virginia, 11; California, 8; Arkansas, 1; and Kansas, 0.
North Dakota and Utah lost 1 unit each to reach respective counts of 42 and 8. Colorado, meanwhile, lost 2 units to reach 28 rigs.
Canada was down 30 rigs this week to 155 units. Rigs drilling for oil hit 55 units, down 15 from a week ago, and those targeting gas reached 100, down 14.
