The American Council for Capital Formation (ACCF) launched a social media, digital, and print advertising campaign urging the US Senate to pass a Congressional Review Act disapproval resolution revoking the US Bureau of Land Management’s venting and flaring rule. The US House approved the resolution by 221 to 191 votes last month (OGJ Online, Feb. 3, 2017).
“Not only is this rule redundant, it comes with a hefty price tag that will reduce tax revenues by more than $110 million annually,” ACCF Vice-Pres. and General Counsel Tim Doyle said. “The Senate should follow the House’s lead and vote in support of the CRA resolution to repeal this this duplicative and costly rule.”
BLM adopted a final rule to reduce waste of gas from venting and flaring on onshore federal and Indian tribal lands on Nov. 18, 2016. It became effective on Jan. 17, and replaced regulations which were adopted in 1979.
“BLM’s venting and flaring rule is a classic case of the federal government implementing a solution in search of a problem,” Doyle said. “Between industry advancements and work being done at the state regulatory level, states already have effective measures in place that have significantly decreased methane emissions.
