The Quadrant Energy Ltd.-led partnership with fellow Perth company Carnarvon Petroleum Ltd. has begun planning for the drilling of the Dorado-1 wildcat in the Bedout subbasin offshore Western Australia.

The JV is keen to find additional gas and condensate resources that could be combined with a potential development of the Roc and Phoenix South discoveries.

Carnarvon said in a statement this week that the JV has committed to acquiring long lead items for the new well, which is expected to be spudded during this year’s second half.

Carnarvon says the primary Caley sandstone target at Dorado could hold a mean resource of 545 bcf of gas and 31 million bbl of condensate. The stratigraphically higher Milne sandstone is a secondary target with good prospects, but with higher risk attached.

Dorado lies within permit WA-437-P and lies south of Roc and Phoenix South.

Carnarvon Managing Director Adrian Cook said a large Dorado discovery could be developed as the tie-in point for Roc and Phoenix South fields. The gas could be used to supply Western Australia’s domestic needs and for LNG production.

Quadrant has 80% of the permit and Carnarvon 20%.
