An American Petroleum Institute official expressed approval at the US Senate’s passing the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act because it ensures that the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund has the necessary resources to maintain US ports and harbors.

“The US is leading the world in the production of oil and gas and in the reduction of carbon emissions which are near 20-year lows,” API Executive VP Martin J. Durbin said the day after the Senate’s Dec. 9 vote. The House passed the measure a few days earlier.

“By taking steps to improve our nation’s ports and harbors, American consumers, American workers, and the environment will continue to benefit from America’s energy renaissance,” he said.

The nation’s ports and harbors are essential to the petroleum industry since about 40% of all goods moved on US waterways are crude oil or products, Durbin noted.
