Technip SA, Paris, has released additional details of its earlier contract let by State Oil Co. of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) for delivery of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for the modernization of subsidiary Azerikimya Production Union’s (PU) petrochemical complex in Sumgait, Azerbaijan, north of Baku.

Technip SA, Paris, has released additional details of its earlier contract let by State Oil Co. of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) for delivery of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for the modernization of subsidiary Azerikimya Production Union’s (PU) petrochemical complex in Sumgait, Azerbaijan, north of Baku (OGJ Online, Mar. 10, 2016).

Technip’s scope of work will involve modernization of the EP-300 steam cracker, including construction of cracker furnaces licensed by Technip, as well as installation of a refinery dry gas treatment unit, ethylene and propylene storage, and related utilities and off-site facilities, Technip said.

To be executed from Technip’s operating center in Rome, the EPC contract also covers modernization of associated instrumentation, a control system, and work at the control building to improve overall efficiency and safety of the plant, the service provider said.

Technip, which valued the contract at less than $50 million, plans to complete the project during first-half 2019.

Upon first announcing the contract award in March, SOCAR said reconstruction of the ethylene and PE plant, which will increase overall production capacity at the plant, will provide feedstock for the company’s PE and polypropylene projects in the nearby Sumgait Chemical Industrial Park, as well as enable Azerbaijan to boost its volume of petrochemical exports (OGJ Online, Feb. 5, 2016).

In 2015, Azerikimya PU commissioned a 87,600-tonne/year (tpy) unit for the desulfurization of liquefied gas, a 120,000-tpy installation for the hydrogenation of butylene-butadiene fractions, and an isopropyl alcohol unit at the Sumgait petrochemical plant (OGJ Online, Oct. 26, 2015), which alongside its production of 260,000 tpy of ethylene and PE, produces 136,000 tpy of propylene, 156,000 tpy of polypropylene, 25,000 tpy of industrial isopropyl alcohol, and 1,750 tpy of absolute di-isopropyl alcohol.
