Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. and Masdar, the renewable-energy division of state investment firm Mubadala Development Co., have commissioned a commercial-scale project to capture carbon dioxide emitted by a steel plant for use in enhanced oil recovery.

A joint-venture company, Al Reyadah, built a facility adjacent to an Emirates Steel Industries plant at Musaffah, Abu Dhabi, able to capture as much as 800,000 tonnes/year of CO2.

Gas compressed and dehydrated at the facility moves by a 45-km pipeline for injection into gas fields at Rumaitha and Bab.

ADNOC owns 51% of Al Reyadah. Masdar holds the remainder.
