Silva elected Petrobras director of strategy, management

Nelson Luiz Costa Silva has been elected by Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras) as director of its strategy, organization, and management system department. He joined the Brazilian state-owned firm as a senior consultant in June.

His 40-year career includes international experience in Mexico, Japan, Argentina, France, and England. After serving as global president of aluminum and commercial officer of iron ore, coal, and manganese at BHP Billiton in London and later Singapore, he joined BG Group PLC in 2009 as a leader of its South American business, where he oversaw oil and gas exploration and production on blocks in Brazil and Bolivia, gas distribution, and offshore transshipment in Uruguay.

He served as chairman of Comgas from October 2009 until its divestment by BG in November 2012. He remained BG's chief executive officer in Brazil until the recent sale of the group to Royal Dutch Shell PLC.
