The Alberta government has established the Oil Sands Advisory Group to assist with policy-making related to oil sands development and climate change.
The group will advise the government in these areas:
• Implementing the legislated annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions limit.
• “Best investments in innovation to reduce GHG emissions intensity in oil sands production.”
• Developing “durable, effective structures and processes to address local and regional environmental issues (i.e., air, land, water, biodiversity, cumulative effects).”
The group has three co-chairs and 15 plenary members serving 24-month terms.
Co-chairs are Dave Collyer, former president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers and Shell Canada; Tzeporah Berman, environmental activist and adjunct professor, Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University, Toronto; and Melody Lepine, director, government and industry relations, Mikisew Cree First Nation.
