Explosive munitions struck the In Salah gas plant in Krechba, Algeria, early Mar. 18. No injuries were reported, but operators shut down the central processing facility as a precaution.
Statoil ASA, BP PLC, and Algeria’s Sonatrach operate the In Salah gas joint venture, which lies about 1,200 km south of Algiers in the southern Sahara (OGJ Online, Feb. 16, 2016).
Statoil said explosive munitions were fired “from a distance” at about 6 a.m. local time. The company said its three employees at the plant are safe. BP said there were no reports of any injuries in a rocket attack from outside the site perimeter.
The joint venture in Hassi Messaoud in eastern Algeria has mobilized its emergency response organization.
Forty people were killed in a terror attack in January 2013 at the In Amenas facility east of In Salah in eastern Algeria, near the Libyan border (OGJ Online, Jan. 16, 2013; Sept. 2, 2014).
