Statoil ASA reported one fatality and two injuries from a “breaking wave” on the COSL Innovator semisubmersible drilling rig in Troll field west of Bergen in the North Sea on Dec. 30.
The COSL Innovator rig, which is under contract to Statoil, is operated by China Oilfield Services Ltd., or COSL. The semi was hit by a “wave surge” that built up and slammed into it, damaging the accommodations module, said Jorgen Andersen, COSL chief executive officer.
Some rig personnel were flown to shore, while the rig is heading to shore under its own power, Statoil said. A reception facility has been established at Kokstad with doctors, nurses, and psychologists.
Before the incident, the Innovator had been taken off a well as a result of harsh weather.
