Koch Nitrogen Co., Wichita, let a reimbursable engineering, procurement, and construction contract to KBR Inc. for a grassroots urea plant to be built in conjunction with a $1.3 billion expansion of its fertilizer complex at Enid, Okla.

KBR, which already holds the contract for urea engineering and procurement services, also will provide construction management services for expansion of existing ammonia plants and site utilities and infrastructure to support the project.

The new urea plant will have capacity of 900,000 tons/year. The expansion will increase urea and ammonia production capacity by more than 1 million tons/year.

Construction for the total project, which will take 18-24 months, began last month. In addition to the new urea plant, the project includes:

• Efficiency improvements and capacity increases to existing ammonia plants.

• Added capability to produce high-purity urea for diesel exhaust fluid.

• Construction of high-speed truck and rail-loading facilities, complementing existing access to Burlington Northern and Union Pacific rail systems.

• Addition of 90,000 tons of urea-storage capacity.

• Construction of equipment to process water discharged from Enid’s wastewater-treatment plant to lower the facility’s requirements for drinking water.

• Construction of an electric-power substation.

Other major contractors for the expansion include Black & Veatch for project planning, engineering, and procurement and Stamicarbon for urea synthesis and granulation technology.
