Petrobras wraps Replan refinery revamp

Brazil’s Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras) has completed an expansion and modernization project at its 415,000-b/d Replan refinery in Paulinia, Sao Paulo.

The recent start-up of the waste gas treatment unit marks the completion of a $5 billion modernization program at the Replan refinery, which has been one of the largest and most complex modernization projects the company has taken at any of its refineries, Petrobras said.

The revamp of the refinery included installations designed to enable the plant to produce cleaner derivaties as well as improve recovery of sulfur generated in the refinery’s production processes, the company said.

The modernization program at Replan also involved the optimization and integration of processing units at the plant, which has equipped the refinery to increase its production of diesel and gasoline, Petrobras said.

The Replan refinery, Brazil’s largest, processes about 80% of crude oil produced from the offshore Campos basin and accounts for 20% of all oil refining in Brazil, the company said.

Crude oil processing capacity at Replan increased to 415,000 b/d during this year’s first quarter, according to a May 12 presentation from Petrobras.
