The environmental impact assessment report on a project to modernize the power plant at Neste Oil’s 205,000-b/d Porvoo, Finland, refinery has been completed, the company reported.

The report, which contains details on the various alternatives proposed as part of the project and an evaluation of their environmental impact, indicates that all three options have positive environmental impact in terms of reducing the plant’s current emissions, Neste Oil said.

The power plant modernization project, which covers the company's plan to replace older power-generating units at the refinery with new ones, will enable the plant to comply with future emission and energy efficiency requirements, according to a May 2, 2013, release from the company.

Neste Oil expects the new units—which could be built and commissioned in phases—to be fully operational by yearend-2023.

In May, Neste Oil said the total output of the Porvoo refinery’s power plant stood at about 900 Mw, of which 480 Mw of capacity is scheduled for replacement.
