PDVSA lets contract for Barinas refinery

Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) has let a contract to Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Wison Engineering Services Co. Ltd. to build a refinery at Barinas, Venezuela.

Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) has let a contract to Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Wison Engineering Services Co. Ltd. to build a refinery at Barinas, Venezuela.

The contract is for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the first phase of the Batalla Santa Ines refinery as well as a 40-km expressway linking the complex to the city of Barinas, 420 km southwest of Caracas, PDVSA said.

With a capacity of 40,000 b/d, the first phase of the refinery will process Venezuelan Guafita crude oil and will be commissioned in 2016, according to PDVSA.

The contract, which was signed on Dec. 4, is worth an estimated $2.3 billion, PDVSA said.

PDVSA last let a contract in 2011 for work on the Batalla Santa Ines refinery (OGJ Online, July 5, 2011), on which the state-owned company first broke ground in 2008 (OGJ Online, Oct. 13, 2008).
