Farabi Petrochemicals Co. has awarded a concept study and technology selection contract for the Jazan Petrochemicals Project in Saudi Arabia to a unit of Foster Wheeler AG’s global engineering and construction group.

The contract is for developing the overall concept for the project, which is planned to include a linear alkyl benzene plant and units producing specialty chemicals derived from diesel feedstock.

In addition to developing a capital and operating cost estimate as well as the invitation to tender for the front-end engineering design, Foster Wheeler also will recommend the technology for the production of low aromatics solvent and for the treatment of heavy fuel oil.

The study will be completed in first-quarter 2014.

Foster Wheeler previously worked with Farabi on its petrochemical plant in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia, which produces 120,000 tonnes/year of normal-paraffins and 70,000 tonnes/year of linear alkyl benzene (OGJ Online, May 6, 2002).
