Swala Energy Ltd., Perth, said Polaris International has launched a 2D seismic survey on the Kilosa-Kilombero license in the frontier Kilosa basin in southern Tanzania.
Swala’s 65% owned subsidiary Swala Oil & Gas (Tanzania) Ltd. and joint venture partner Otto Energy Ltd. will collect 100 line-km of 2D seismic in the coming weeks. The program is designed to identify the main structural lineation in the basins and has the potential to identify structural leads for follow-up infill seismic and-or drilling.
The Kilosa basin area has been identified from interpretation of airborne gravity and magnetic data acquired in 2012 as part of the Year 1 work program.
The Kilosa basin is estimated to be as deep as 7,000 m, and this estimate and outcrop geology suggest that the underlying geology comprises both Karoo (Permo-Triassic) and Neogene sediments, the latter representing the oil play system in the East African rift system where Tullow Oil PLC has made major oil discoveries at Lake Albert in Uganda and in northern Kenya.
On completion of the program the Polaris team will mobilize to the Kidatu basin due south of the Kilosa basin for the second of five seismic programs on the Kilosa-Kilombero and Pangani licenses that will be completed in 3 to 4 months and satisfy the exploration work program commitment for the second contract year.
