US drilling rig count sinks 11 units to 1,748

The US drilling rig count fell 11 units during the week ended June 21 to reach a total of 1,748 rotary rigs working, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.

Baker Hughes said losses were on land and inland water. Land-based drilling was down 12 units from a week ago to 1,670 rigs. The inland waters count was down by 1 to 22. The offshore count rose by 2 to 56. Of the rigs drilling offshore, 54 were in the Gulf of Mexico, unchanged from a week ago.

Rigs drilling for oil lost 15 units to reach 1,390, while those targeting gas gained 4 units to reach 353 rigs working. Five rigs were considered unclassified, unchanged from a week ago.

Rigs drilling horizontally were reported at 1,067, down 12 units from a week ago, and 104 fewer than the comparable week last year. Rigs drilling directionally lost 2 units this week to reach 240. This compared with 242 rigs working horizontally in the comparable week a year ago.

Texas at 832 was down by 11 units. Oklahoma was down 5 units to 173. Louisiana, at 103, and North Dakota, at 175, were down by three.

Three states were unchanged: Alaska, 8; Arkansas, 14; and Pennsylvania, 54.

Two states were up by 3 rigs: West Virginia at 25, and Wyoming at 49. California was up by 2 rigs to 39 total. Colorado, at 63, and New Mexico, at 76, were each up by 1.

Canada’s rig count gained 9 units this week to reach 206. This count includes 148 rigs drilling for oil (up 1 from a week ago) and 58 units drilling for gas (up 8 from a week ago). Canada’s rig count total was down 55 units from the comparable week last year.
