US drilling rig count seesaws back up 6 units to 1,771

The US drilling rig count gained back 6 units during the week ended June 14, seesawing back to a total of 1,771 rotary rigs working, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.

Land-based drilling increased by 8 units from a week ago to 1,694 rigs working. The offshore rig count lost 2 units to reach 54, while inland water drilling was unchanged at 23. Of the rigs drilling offshore, 52 were in the Gulf of Mexico, a decrease of 1 unit from a week ago.

Rigs drilling for oil gained 7 units to reach 1,413, while those targeting gas lost 1 unit this week, reaching 353 rigs working. Five rigs were considered unclassified, unchanged from a week ago.

Rigs drilling horizontally were reported at 1,086, down 2 units from a week ago, and 76 fewer than the comparable week last year. Rigs drilling directionally gained another 6 units this week to reach 244. This compared with 233 rigs working horizontally in the comparable week a year ago.

Of the major oil and gas producing states, Louisiana was up 3 units to 109. Texas and Colorado, at respective counts of 846 and 62, each gained 2 rigs. California made a 1-rig gain to reach 38 units working. Four states were unchanged from last week: Oklahoma, 183; North Dakota, 178; Pennsylvania, 54; and Arkansas, 14. Four states were down 1 rig each from a week ago, namely New Mexico, 76; Wyoming, 46; Ohio, 32; and Alaska, 6. West Virginia, at 22 rigs working, was down 2 units.

Canada’s rig count gained 24 units this week to reach 176. This count includes 126 rigs drilling for oil (up 26 units from a week ago) and 50 units drilling for gas (down 2 rigs from last week). Canada’s rig count total was down 72 units from the comparable week last year.
