US drilling rig count falls 6 units to 1,765

The US drilling rig count fell 6 units during the week ended June 7, reaching a total of 1,765 rotary rigs working, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.

Land-based drilling decreased by 5 units from a week ago to 1,686 rigs working. The offshore count gained 1 unit to 56, while inland water drilling dropped to 23, down 2 units. Of the rigs drilling offshore, 53 were in the Gulf of Mexico, an increase of 1 unit from a week ago.

Rigs drilling for oil fell by 4 units to 1,406, while those targeting gas were unchanged again this week at 354 rigs working. Five rigs were considered unclassified, a decrease of 2 units from a week ago.

Rigs drilling horizontally were reported at 1,088, down 1 unit from a week ago, and 89 fewer than the comparable week last year. Rigs drilling directionally gained 6 units to 238. This compared with 235 rigs working horizontally in the comparable week a year ago.

Of the major oil and gas producing states, Oklahoma lost 5 rigs to 183. Pennsylvania and California, with respective counts of 54 and 37, were down 4 rigs each. Louisiana, at 106 units working, was down 1 rig from a week ago. Arkansas and Alaska were both unchanged at 14 and 7, respectively. Five states gained 1 rig each: Texas, 844; New Mexico, 77; Colorado, 60; Ohio, 33, and West Virginia, 24. North Dakota, at 178, and Wyoming, at 47, both gained 2 rigs each this week.

Canada’s rig count was up 7 rigs this week to 152. This count includes 100 rigs drilling for oil (up 11 units from a week ago) and 52 units drilling for gas (down 4 rigs from last week). The total was down 78 units from the comparable week last year.
