Statoil hires Stena Carron drillship for offshore Angola

Statoil signed a 3-year, $700 million contract for the Stena Carron drillship for offshore Angola where Statoil will test the presalt potential in Kwanza basin deepwater Blocks 38 and 39.

Stena Drilling, a subsidiary of Stena AB, owns the drillship (OGJ, June 6, 2008, Newsletter).

In the Stena Carron contract, Statoil also secured two 1-year extension options for work in Kwanza basin (OGJ, Mar. 5, 2012, Newsletter).

Statoil previously has said it wants to produce 2.5 million boe/d in 2020, which will require sufficient rig capacity (OGJ Online, Jan, 13, 2012).

“We have secured rigs for our needs in 2013 and 2014, and we are also targeting the allocation of rigs and developing new rig concepts to ensure more capacity in the market,” said Jon Arnt Jacobsen, Statoil’s chief procurement officer.
