Canada approves LNG export license

Canada’s National Energy Board has approved an application to export LNG by LNG Canada Development Inc. from LNG Canada’s proposed plant near Kitimat, BC.

The license authorizes LNG Canada to export 670 million tonnes of LNG (about 32.95 tcf) over 25 years. The maximum allowed will be 24 million tonnes/year, or 3.23 bcfd.

In approving the application, NEB determined the quantity of gas to be exported does not exceed the surplus remaining, after allowance for the “reasonably foreseeable requirements” for use in Canada.

LNG Canada’s project is one of several proposed or being developed for the Pacific Coast of British Columbia (OGJ, Jan. 7, 2013, p. 42; OGJ Online, Apr. 13, 2012, May 16, 2012).
