Wynnewood Refining explosion kills one worker

A Sept. 28 boiler explosion at a Wynnewood, Okla., refinery owned by CVR Energy Inc. of Sugar Land, Tex., killed one worker and critically injured another, a spokeswoman with the US Department of Labor said Oct. 1, adding the incident is under investigation.

Wynnewood Refining Co., which has a capacity of 70,000 b/d, was shut down for scheduled maintenance when a boiler being brought back into operation exploded late Sept. 28.

The turnaround resumed Sept. 29 at the refinery. Investigators with the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration also arrived at the refinery on Sept. 29.

CVR Chief Executive Officer Jack Lipinski released a statement saying the company was “cooperating fully” with the investigation.

“Our focus is to determine how this accident occurred and what steps must be taken to avoid a repeat of this incident,” Lipinski said. CVR purchased the refinery from Gary-Williams Energy Co. in 2011.
