Australia: Officer basin shows noncommercial

By OGJ editors

Rodinia Oil Corp., Calgary, said its second exploratory well in the Officer basin of South Australia found excellent thick reservoirs throughout the Neoproterozoic section and no commercial hydrocarbon accumulations despite encouraging shows.

Kutjara-1 went to a total depth of 2,453.7 m at the top of the interpreted Mesoproterozoic section. The subsalt Pindyin sandstone objective had better reservoir characteristics and was twice as thick in Kutjara-1 as in Mulyawara-1.

Rodinia is demobilizing the Ensign rig from the Officer Basin and is in discussions with Ensign to use a smaller rig in future wells to improve on rig mobilization and daily drilling costs. Drilling efficiencies were far superior at Kutjara-1 and drilling time decreased by two thirds compared with Mulyawara-1.
