HOUSTON, July 15
-- A joint venture involving the Spanish oil company Repsol has signed a memorandum of understanding with two automakers to encourage the use of electric cars.

Ibil, a 50-50 venture of Repsol and the Basque Energy Agency, signed the MOU with an alliance of Renault of Paris and Nissan of Yokohama. Formed last October, Ibil aims to design, build, and operate a network of integrated services for electric transport in the Basque Country along the Spanish-French border.

Ibil plans to install 125 charging points, which allow electric vehicles to be recharged in line with safety and reliability guarantees, by yearend.

The MOU envisions installation of charging points approved by the Renault-Nissan Alliance in households and companies.
