HOUSTON, July 7 -- Porto Energy Corp., The Woodlands, Tex., through its Mohave Oil & Gas Corp. subsidiary, has spud the SPC-1 well on the Torres Vedras concession in the Lusitanian basin in Portugal.

SPC-1 is the first of a proposed two to four well exploratory program in the company’s Jurassic Reef Trend. Target depth of 1,970 m is expected to test multiple Jurassic reef oil prospect levels as delineated by a recent 120 sq km 3D seismic survey.

The rig recently completed reentry of the Aljubarrota- 4 well to a depth of 2,600 m before being moved to the SPC-1 location (see map, OGJ, Dec. 8, 1997, p. 67). ALJ-4 is a direct offset to the company's ALJ-2 fractured carbonate gas discovery well. The company recovered 65.25 m of conventional core and 430 m of open hole logs in the Jurassic Brenha gas reservoir.

The company is testing and analyzing the core, logs, and associated data. It anticipates results from this testing and analysis within 3 months and has temporarily abandoned ALJ-4 until then. Through Mohave, Porto holds 1,444,152 net acres in five concessions in the basin on which it has identified seven major exploratory trends and generated numerous prospects and leads.
