HOUSTON, July 19 – Statoil Petroleum AS has spud the 16/2-8 appraisal-exploratory well on the Aldous Major South structure in the PL265 license in the North Sea off Norway.
The structure is believed to be the western continuation of the Lundin Petroleum AB-operated PL501 Avaldsnes discovery into PL265, with primary target in sandstone of Upper and Middle Jurassic age (see map, OGJ, Apr. 4, 2011, p. 50). Secondary targets are the Cretaceous Shetland Group chalk and the Triassic Skagerrak formation.
The well is to be drilled to 2,085 m below mean sea level in about 45 days. PL 265 interests are Statoil 40%, Petoro 30%, Det Norske Oljeselskap ASA 20%, and Lundin Petroleum 10%.
