California: Berry gets diatomite project approval

– Berry Petroleum Co., Denver, said it received a revised project approval letter July 22 from the California Department of Conservation, Division of Oil, Gas & Geothermal Resources.

The revision will allow Berry to continue the full field development of its 100% owned North Midway-Sunset diatomite asset. The company is running two rigs and plans to hike output to more than 15,000 b/d by 2014 from 3,000 b/d at present.

The project, in Kern County, Calif., has 360 million bbl of 15° gravity oil in place at 800 ft on 540 acres. Berry is producing through 350 wells on one-half acre spacing from 43 million bbl of proved reserves. Full development involves 1,000 total wells and 83 million bbl or 23% recovery.
