HOUSTON, June 23 – San Leon Energy PLC notified Italian authorities that it is relinquishing two permits off Sicily because it will be unable to obtain environmental authorization to drill exploratory or appraisal wells under a new law.
Publication of a new Italian environmental law in June 2010 placed tighter restrictions on oil and gas exploration within 5 nautical miles of the coast and 12 nautical miles of any protected environmental area.
San Leon will give up the D.352 CR-SL (Narciso) and D.354 CR-SL (Sciacca) permits. Relinquishment will take effect upon publication of a notice in the official Italian Ministerial Gazette. San Leon will retain D.353 CR-SL (Narciso South) and its two onshore Po Valley assets, Sorbolo and Sospiro.
