HOUSTON, May 18
– Tethys Petroleum Ltd. signed a contract with an Uzbek geological institute to study the potential of two prospective areas of the Ustyurt basin in Uzbekistan.

Tethys said the study could lead to the company applying for suitable projects in the two areas. The company made the Doris oil discovery in the Kazakhstan part of the basin 35 km from the Uzbek border and noted there has been no commercial oil find on the Uzbek side.

Therefore, Tethys and the Institute of Geology and Prospecting for Oil and Gas Deposits of NHC Uzbekneftegaz, the state oil and gas company, will review materials on exploration areas in the Ustyurt region and the Bukhara-Khiva region. Tethys believes that, by applying the same geological model and techniques used in discovering Doris to the Uzbek portion of the basin, there is good potential for finding oil there, too.
