– More companies are joining the deepwater exploration play off Kenya.

Apache Corp. is operator with 50% interest in Block L-8 covering 1.3 million acres on trend with discoveries off Tanzania and Mozambique. Other participants are Origin Energy Ltd. 25%, Pancontinental 15%, and Tullow Oil PLC preparing to take a 10% interest by farmout.

The Apache group could drill the large Mbawa prospect, on the deepwater eastern side of the block, in 2012. The block represents Apache’s entry into Kenya.

Dominion Petroleum Ltd. is operator with 60% interest in deepwater Block L-9 off Kenya and has signed the production sharing contract. The company will reprocess 2,500 km of 2D seismic, carry out block-wide geological and geophysical studies, and shoot 500 sq km of 3D seismic in the initial 2-year period. Minimum outlay is $6.15 million.
