HOUSTON, May 17 – An Indiana electric utility is drilling wells, laying gathering lines, and constructing a 13 Mw generating unit it believes to be the first in the US to run exclusively on coalbed methane.
Hoosier Energy Rural Electric Cooperative Inc., Bloomington, Ind., will add the CBM-fired unit to its Merom Generating Station along the Wabash River 30 miles south of Terre Haute.
The CBM-fired unit is to go online in July 2012. Hoosier Energy said it has determined that its lands contain enough coal to provide twice the volume of gas needed for the new unit.
Merom’s two existing coal-fired units, built in the 1980s, at capacity produce more than 1,000 Mw from more than 10,000 tons/day of coal delivered by truck and train from southwestern Indiana mines.
