HOUSTON, May 20 – Zodiac Exploration Inc., Calgary, plans to announce comprehensive results within days from its 4-9 well on the Jaguar prospect in Kings County, Calif., the first deep test in the Kettleman City area in 25 years.
The San Joaquin basin well, in 9-22s-19e, went to a TD of 14,961 ft in the Eocene Kreyenhagen shale, and Zodiac set 7-in. production liner at 12,948-14,950 ft. Zodiac said it is very encouraged by the results of its test program to date and is awaiting further analysis.
The company hopes the test program to help it identify the first zone in which to place a horizontal well, possibly in the next section to the east.
Zodiac logged more than 1,000 ft of potential oil pay in 4-9. It observed high gas readings, oil fluorescence in cuttings, and natural fractures with live oil in core in the Oligocene Allison sand/Whepley shale, Eocene-Oligocene Vaqueros sandstone, and Eocene Tumey/Kreyenhagen shales.
Zodiac said the well data support the company’s expectations for the oil potential of the Allison/Whepley and Vaqueros formations and the company’s hypothesis that the underlying Tumey/Kreyenhagen formations are major new oil plays in the basin. The well cut more than 650 ft of a total approximate regional thickness of 800 ft of Tumey/Kreyenhagen.
Zodiac has 87,000 net acres in Kings County and believes the lands contain both unconventional, low permeability and conventional prospects. The primary prospect is characterized as naturally fractured, low permeability sandstone and shale package contained in the Vaqueros and Whepley formations.
