HOUSTON, Apr. 12 -- Seadrill Ltd. exercised an option for Samsung Heavy Industries Ltd. to construct an ultradeepwater dual derrick drillship at Samsung’s shipyard in Geoje, South Korea. The total project cost is estimated at $600 million.
Delivery of the new drillship is slated for third-quarter 2013. The ship is similar to two already ordered by Seadrill from Samsung in November 2010.
The drillship will feature dynamic positioning and will be capable of drilling in 12,000 ft of water. It will have a hook load capability of 1,250 tons. This rig also will have a seven-ram blowout preventer configuration, Seadrill said.
The rig's design and capabilities, including a dual derrick, allow for numerous well construction and field development activities that can be performed in parallel.
