HOUSTON, Mar. 21 – The Ministry of Energy has awarded Dominion Petroleum Ltd. operatorship and a 60% working interest in Block L9 off Mombasa, Kenya.
Dominion, which also holds Block 7 off Tanzania, said that due to the amount of interest expressed by potential partners in Block 7 it may seek to include L9 in any subsequent farmout process and try to coordinate exploratory activities.
Total SA drilled the Simba-1 well 60 miles off Mombasa on the block in 1978-79 to a total depth of 3,604 m in Late Cretaceous. The well was plugged and abandoned with gas shows in the Tertiary/Upper Cretaceous, suggesting a working petroleum system in the Lamu basin. Oil seeps have been identified north of L9.
Following signature, the initial exploration period will last for 2 years. A gross minimum work commitment of $6.15 million includes shooting 500 sq km of 3D seismic. After 2 years the option is to relinquish or commit to another 2 years with a one-well obligation.
