HOUSTON, Mar. 28
– A group led by Cepsa Colombia SA as operator of the El Porton block in Colombia’s Llanos basin has elected not to attempt to further test the Calatea-1 exploratory well due to an influx of gas. The option of future re-entry is kept open.

The well went to a total depth of 16,821 ft true vertical depth, and electric logs acquired using a logging-while-drilling tool indicate a possible hydrocarbon-bearing zone in the Lower Cretaceous Une formation, said Petroamerica Oil Corp., Calgary, which has a 25% participating interest in the block.

The well encountered positive hydrocarbon indicators in the form of very high trip gas readings and oil in the mud filter-cake while drilling the prospective reservoir sections, Petroamerica said. However, following the deployment of high mud weights to control the gas influx into the well, difficult down-hole conditions ensued.

Petroamerica recently entered into a four-block transaction with Talisman Colombia Oil & Gas Ltd., of which the El Porton block is one. The assignment by Talisman of the participating interest is subject to approval by Cepsa Colombia and Colombian governmental and-or regulatory approvals. Cepsa Colombia has 50% interest and Talisman 25%.
