HOUSTON, Feb. 10 – A group led by Kosmos Energy LLC has a geologically important multipool oil and gas-condensate discovery near giant Jubilee oil field on the West Cape Three Points block off Ghana.
The Teak-1 well cut 239 ft of net oil and gas bearing pay in five stacked, high-quality sandstones of Campanian and Turonian age. Hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs of Mid-to-Lower Campanian age have not been present in Kosmos’s previously drilled wells in the Tano basin, and the well potentially opens a new exploration play fairway, the firm said.
The pay zones consist of 154 ft of gas and gas-condensate and 85 ft of oil. Oil is 40° gravity in Campanian reservoirs and 32° gravity in Turonian zones. The discovery is updip and northeast of Jubilee field.
Kosmos designed the Teak well to evaluate potential objectives at multiple horizons and test alternative trap models. Appraisal of the hydrocarbon pools in the Teak-1 discovery will include delineation wells optimally located to test the thickest and potentially most developed portions of each reservoir.
Teak-1 went to 10,398 ft in 2,847 ft of water in the western part of the block. Surface location is 2.4 miles northeast of the Mahogany-2 well, and bottomhole location is 2.9 miles from Mahogany-2, which appraised the company’s 2007 Jubilee field discovery well. After logging, Teak-1 is to be suspended for future use pending field appraisal.
The Atwood Hunter semisubmersible will drill Teak-2, which primarily will target Turonian-age reservoirs similar in age to those in the Jubilee and Mahogany East areas.
West Cape Three Points holdings are Kosmos Energy and Anadarko Petroleum Corp. 30.875% each, Tullow Oil PLC 22.896%, EO Group Ltd. 3.5%, Sabre Oil & Gas Holdings Ltd. 1.854%, and Ghana National Petroleum Corp. 10% carried.
