HOUSTON, Jan. 14 -- US drilling activity was unchanged this week, with 1,700 rotary rigs still working including 1,661 land rigs, 14 in inland waters, and 25 offshore, still all in the Gulf of Mexico, said Baker Hughes Inc. That compared with a total of 1,248 rotary rigs drilling in the same week last year.
Of the US rigs now working, the number drilling for natural gas decreased by 12 to 914. Those drilling for oil increased by a like number, 12, to789. There were 9 rigs unclassified. Horizontal drilling increased by 1 rig to 967. Directional drilling increased by 8 units to 219.
Rig counts among major producing states included North Dakota and New Mexico, up 3 each to 154 and 72, respectively. California, West Virginia, and Alaska gained 1 rig each for respective counts of 39, 21, and 6. Unchanged were Oklahoma, 164; Pennsylvania, 103; and Arkansas, 37. Colorado and Wyoming were down 1 rig each to 63 and 46, respectively. Texas and Louisiana lost 2 rigs each to 731 and 166.
Canada’s rig count shot up by 155 to 577 units drilling. That’s up from 466 rigs working in the comparable period a year ago.
