HOUSTON, Jan. 7
– A joint venture led by a unit of Otto Energy Ltd., Perth, has secured a rig to drill the Duhat-1 exploratory well in Service Contract 51 onshore northwestern Leyte in the east-central Philippines.

DESCO Rig 1 will drill the land prospect to 1,000 m to test the oil potential of Miocene Tagnocot limestones and sandstones on the San Isidro anticline. The well is expected to spud in March 2011. Prognosed source is Upper Oligocene Taog shale.

Numerous old wells exist in the area, but Otto Energy said Duhat-1 will be the island’s first valid structural test in an area of documented oil seeps.
