Mississippi: Deep Haynesville prospect cased

HOUSTON, Jan. 18 –
Mainland Resources Inc., Houston, has negotiated extension of almost all leases that were to have expired in 2011 on the Buena Vista prospect in Jefferson County, Miss.

Drilled to a total depth of 22,000 ft and cased at a total cost of $9.5 million, the Burkley-Phillips-1 was among the 10 deepest US onshore wells drilled in 2010, the company said. It is a Jurassic Haynesville shale prospect.

Analysis of wireline logs and a 21-ft core cut at 20,415 ft are being used to confirm reservoir characteristics and validate the company’s observations of the core sample that a natural fracture system exists in the shale. The company said the shale may be more than 2,000 ft thick in the area.

The company is seeking insight into gas in place in the matrix, porosity, permeability, gas quality, mineralogy, and total organic carbon. The well offsets a Chevron wildcat drilled in 1981 (OGJ Online, July 21, 2010).
