HOUSTON, Oct. 29 -- Pioneer Natural Resources Co., Irving, Tex., plans to horizontally drill the Lower Wolfcamp shale, an unconventional formation that has produced oil in vertical wells on its Permian basin acreage.
Management said the Lower Wolfcamp resource play is ubiquitously prospective across the company’s acreage, although well control indicates that reservoir quality starts to decrease near the southern boundary.
Vertical wells have averaged 15-60 b/d in the upper middle to northern part of the acreage, where the formation is 200-300 ft thick. Total organic carbon in the formation is very high based on core analysis from recent Pioneer wells and from other wells drilled in the 1950s-60s.
Two horizontal wells would have a 4,000-5,000 ft lateral and 14 frac stages, the company said.
