HOUSTON, Sept. 23 -- India’s Oil & Natural Gas Corp. Ltd. has formulated a comprehensive shale gas pilot program and has spudded its first well northwest of Calcutta in West Bengal state.
ONGC on Sept. 21 spudded the RNSG-1 well is in Ichapur village near Durgapur in the Burdwan district. It is projected to 2,000 m to assess the potential of a 700-m-thick shale of Permian age. Schlumberger has the contract to manage operations at the first well, and ONGC expects to have results by the end of October.
ONGC plans to drill three more shale gas wells in the Damodar basin in West Bengal and Bihar states.
The company said it took a systematic approach to unconventional gas starting in 2006. It identified, characterized, and prioritized Indian basins that hold promise for shale gas by comparing them with US basins. It highgraded the Damodar and Cambay basins based on gas content, geochemical parameters, logistics, and depth considerations.
