HOUSTON, Feb. 26 -- US drilling activity continued climbing, up by 28 units to 1,373 rotary rigs working this week. That compares with 1,243 rigs drilling a year ago, Baker Hughes Inc. reported.
Land operations accounted for the bulk of the increase, up by 25 rigs to 1,313. Inland waters activity increased by 2 units to 14. US offshore gained 1 rig to 44 in the Gulf of Mexico and a total 46 rigs in US waters.
Of the US rigs working, 905 were drilling for natural gas, an increase of 12 from the previous week. Those drilling for oil were up 16 to 456. There were 12 rotary rigs unclassified. Horizontal drilling increased by 21 units to 679. Directional drilling gained 7 to 235.
Among the major producing states, Texas’ weekly rig count jumped by 21 to 565 units drilling. North Dakota was up 4 to 84. New Mexico gained 3 to 59. Louisiana and Alaska increased by 2 rigs each to 209 and 11, respectively. Pennsylvania and California gained 1 rig each to respective counts of 67 and 26. Arkansas was unchanged at 42 rigs drilling. Wyoming’s rig count dipped by 1 to 37. Oklahoma, Colorado, and West Virginia lost 2 rigs each to 111, 48, and 24, respectively.
Canada’s rotary rig count increased by 6 to 576, up from 394 working in the comparable period last year.
