    Talisman Energy Inc. has begun drilling a planned 1,000-m horizontal section in Ordovician Middle Utica shale at the Ste-Gertrude-1 well in Quebec’s St. Lawrence Lowlands after drilling and logging the vertical pilot hole to 2,052 m.

    Mainland Resources Inc., Houston, has spudded the Burkley Phillips-1 well as a 22,000-ft test of Jurassic Haynesville shale in Jefferson County, Miss.
  • 07/14/2010 -- Texas-Gulf Coast
    Clayton Williams Energy Inc., Midland, Tex., said its second Eagle Ford shale well, Smalley-Robinson Unit-1 in Burleson County, Tex., flowed 492 b/d of oil initially and 175 b/d most recently from a 5,500-ft lateral in Eagle Ford at 7,020 ft true vertical depth after a 13-stage frac.

    Westmont Resources Inc. has completed an agreement to acquire 92 wells in Tennessee’s Chattanooga shale region, currently operated by AG Oil & Gas, a division of Domestic Energy Corp.

    Newfield Exploration Co., anchored in oil resource plays in Utah’s Monument Butte field and North Dakota’s Middle Bakken play, is assessing several other onshore US plays including some it isn’t ready to disclose, management said July 23.

    The Sunwing Energy Ltd. unit of Ivanhoe Energy Inc., Calgary, spudded the Zitong-1 horizontal exploratory well on the 1,031-sq mile Zitong block in China’s Sichuan Province.

    Lucas Energy Inc., Houston, is running five workover rigs in the Austin chalk-Eagle Ford trend area of the Texas Gulf Coast, one of which is drilling a new lateral in the Austin chalk formation.

    Petroleum Development Corp., Denver, plans to drill its first horizontal well in the Cretaceous Niobrara formation in northeast Colorado in late 2010.
