Successes mount in Eagle Ford shale play

HOUSTON, Nov. 25 -- Texon Petroleum Ltd., Brisbane, reported logging 142 ft of potential pay in Cretaceous Eagle Ford after deepening a vertical well completed in Cretaceous Olmos sand on the Leighton lease in northeastern McMullen County, Tex.

The Tyler Ranch-4 well has been placed on production after it flowed 410 b/d of oil and 425 Mcfd of gas from 28 ft of pay in Olmos at 8,870 ft earlier in November.

Texon, with 70% working interest, deepened the well to about 11,300 ft and logged 142 ft of potential pay in Eagle Ford and 27 ft of potential pay in the deeper Buda and Edwards limestones.

The Tyler Ranch-4 well, Texon’s fifth Olmos completion in the area, lies off the northeast flank of Hawkville field in La Salle and McMullen counties, where Petrohawk Energy Corp., Houston, is developing Eagle Ford gas-condensate reserves. Tyler Ranch-4 is southwest of Sugarkane (Eagle Ford) field, along the Live Oak-Karnes county line, where wells have averaged 2.1 MMcfd and 347 b/d of condensate.

Between Hawkville and Sugarkane fields, Texon said, the Pioneer Natural Resources Inc. Sinor Ranch-1 well in northern Live Oak County flowed 8.3 MMcfd and 500 b/d from Eagle Ford. And in Karnes County northeast of Sugarkane, the ConocoPhillips Bordovsky-1 well made an initial 1,500 b/d and 4 MMcfd from Eagle Ford.

Consultants reported Eagle Ford in the Tyler Ranch-4 well has log-derived porosity as high as 18% and averaging 12%, total organic carbon up to 6% and averaging 2.2%, and gas saturation averaging 72% with some intervals at 90%, Texon said. Permeabilities are reported well above the threshold required for Eagle Ford productivity. About 75% of the rock is limestone.

Texon holds 70% working interest in 830 acres on the Leighton lease and 100% working interest in another 3,720 acres on the Leighton, Mosman, and Rockingham leases in northeastern McMullen County. It plans to drill the first vertical wells on Mosman and Rockingham in the second quarter of 2010, and horizontal drilling will follow.

Other owners in the Tyler Ranch-4 well are Global Petroleum Ltd. and Excellong Inc., each with 15% interest.
