Linde, Sabic say LAO technology commercial

By OGJ editors
HOUSTON, Nov. 25
-- Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (Sabic) and Linde Group say linear alpha olefins (LAO) technology they jointly developed is commercial (OGJ, Jan. 9, 2006, p. 48).

Linde-KCA-Dresden GMBH handled engineering, procurement, and construction for a 150,000-tonne/year plant at Jubail, Saudi Arabia, for Sabic’s wholly owned Jubail United Petrochemical Co.

After a May performance test proved commercial capability of the facility in May, the Sabic affiliate accepted the results in July.

Markus Raab, managing director of Linde’s engineering division, said the technology, called Alpha-SABLIN, “is the first and only commercially proven LAO technology which is available for licensing to third parties.”

The process uses ethylene as a feedstock for a one-stage homogeneous reaction that produces a range of high-purity LAOs.
